The three-part mini-series *A Very English Scandal* airing on BBC One is grounded in the real life of Jeremy Thorpe. During the late 1960s, after homosexuality became legal in Britain, Jeremy Thorpe—then the youngest party leader in over a century and head of the Liberal Party—hid that he had once been involved romantically with Norman Scott (portrayed by Ben Whishaw). Worried about this relationship continuing to threaten him, Thorpe devised plans to eliminate Scott, yet he was ultimately accused of attempting murder rather than actual murder. Consequently, Thorpe became the first British politician to go through a murder trial and inadvertently disclosed his homosexual past publicly; though found not guilty, his political career ended shortly thereafter. Directed by Stephen Frears and penned by Russell T. Davies, the show delves into these events.。
