"Back in the Day" occurs between the late '80s and today, telling a raw story of Anthony Rodriguez (played by William DeMeo). Born partly Italian and partly Puerto Rican, this teenage boy grows up in the perilous and discriminatory neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn—where bullies, influential figures, and gang affiliations ruled. Despite enduring a physically and emotionally abusive, jobless dad who drank excessively, Anthony's mom provided unwavering care until her premature passing left him deeply heartbroken. Amidst his cynicism, Anthony strives to preserve the values she instilled in him while maintaining respect for himself despite overwhelming obstacles. A local crime lord named Enzo DeVino (Michael Madsen) takes interest in Anthony’s dreams of escaping his hardships via boxing. Enzo introduces Anthony to a rigorous coach (Danny Glover) who pushes him fiercely, transforming Anthony from an unknown talent into a competitive fighter. However, his complicated past and unruly peers continue to complicate his path towards stardom. Onward toward maturity, Anthony achieves more than just turning professional—he rises to fame as a middleweight world champion at an unexpected age. Alongside this triumph come tales of romance lost and regained, shame, retribution, and vendettas that shape his rise. Yet, reaching the pinnacle brings questions: Who remains after such a struggle? Whose presence might still obstruct Anthony’s aspirations and personal fulfillment?。
